Turning Pain Into Power...

 Written November 11, 2018

"Just Deal with It." This saying became way too familiar in my life. In the 4 years prior to my official MS diagnosis every doctor I saw would say that same exact thing before they would walk out the door and give me a random prescription in hopes of easing the pain. Being a 30-year-old at the prime time in my life, I learned over the years to ignore my pains and push through my life no matter what. Beginning of 2017, things started to change when my ability to walk and participate in activities was put to a halt. I knew at that moment that my life was not going to be the same. In December of 2017, I was relieved to finally be told what was going on with me but at the same time I was angry, scared and unsure what my future may become. After several doctor visits, tests, medications and bringing myself to accepting my new journey I told myself I would no longer "Just Deal with It".

I used my hunger for knowledge, and sly navigating skills online to find more support because I knew I could not do this alone. Who would have known that after a few months of searching that Facebook would lead me several different workout programs such as the The MS Gym(online) and Cross fit Hogback.

Within The MS Gym, I have made friendships with other MS warriors who have helped me gain courage, strength, and hope. I even tried out one of The MS Gym trial boot camps called BGB. Even though I only had 2 weeks of this program, I can honestly say that these exercises helped some of my areas of concern long with highlighting areas I was unaware of.

As for cross fit, my old coworker was posting on Facebook about a FREE foundations class. At first, I was a little hesitant because I was unsure of what cross fit was but so far, I have enjoyed it. I have grown fond of the moments of groaning as I sit down and stand up because my muscles ache so much. I have already made great connections with the other individuals and found out that one of them has MS as well. They are a tight knit family that offers support, lots of patience and motivation. Did I mention that I ran 200m without any pain for the first time in 2 years? Cross fit is based on functional movement which we all do on a daily basis. It does include endurance and weightlifting which has helped tremendously with my pain issues. Best part is that they will train you to be the best you can be at your ability level. Everyone works at their pace and their level.

My day may start off with a few dishes being dropped or waking up to annoying pains but in the end, I do not have to lean against the wall like a wall flower. I can make a choice to pick up those dishes, attend a cross fit class or work out with some of the MS Gym exercises. "I no longer will just deal with MS, MS now has to just deal with me."
